MS SQL Server 2019 installation procedure

This Document provides step by step instruction for installation of MS SQL Server 2019 for YSoft SafeQ CRS server. Document is divided in to several parts:

Images in this section are illustrative only, and may be different according to the Windows service pack you are using.

Installing SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS)

Run the SQL server installer. When the SQL Server Installation Center window appears, select Install SQL Server Management Tools.

Download and install SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS).

Installing SQL Server 2019

Go back to the SQL Server Installation Center, select New SQL Server stand-alone installation or add features to an existing installation.

The SQL Server installer copies all required files to the server. Click Next to continue.

Enter the SQL Server product key; then click Next.

Accept the license agreement; then click Next

On the Feature Selection page:

  1. Select the features to install. For YSoft SafeQ CRS, the following features are required: 
    - Database Engine Services
    - SQL Server Replication
    - Analysis Services
    - Integration Services 

  2. Select the Shared feature directory for the installation. 

  3. Click Next.

Keep Default Instance selected and click Next.

On the Server Configuration page:

  1. Specify the service accounts.

  2. For the SQL Server Agent service, change the Startup Type to Automatic.

  3. Click Next.

  1. Select Mixed Mode.

  2. Enter the password.

  3. Specify the SQL Server Administrator account (local non-domain account with administrative privileges usually works the best).

  4. Click Next.

  1. Select Multidimensional and Data Mining Mode.

  2. Specify users with administrative permissions for Analysis Services (local non-domain account with administrative privileges usually works the best and using the same account as in the point above simplifies the further configuration).

  3. Click Next.

SQL Server is ready to install. Click Next.

When installation is complete, click Close

Enable the TCP/IP listener:

  1. Open SQL Server Configuration manager (Start >Microsoft SQL Server 2019 > SQL Server 2019 Configuration manager). 

  2. Expand SQL Server Network Configuration > select your instance > right-click TCP/IP and click Enabled

  3. Right-click TCP/IP > Properties > tab IP Addresses > verify that port is set to default value 1433 .
    Note: If you have multiple instances installed, only one instance may bind to a single port. If the 1433 is already taken, use some higher free number, e.g. 1489. Avoid using 1434 since this is used by MSSQL - DAC.

  4. Restart all MS SQL services bound to your instance.

Grant NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM sufficient rights

    1. Start Microsoft SQL Management Studio and connect to the Database Engine as the user sa.

    2. Expand Security > Logins > Right-click NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM > Properties > Server Roles > tick sysadmin > press OK.

Installing SQL Server Reporting Services

This step is optional. Install it only if you are absolutely sure you wish to utilize capabilities of Reporting Services . For most of customers it is usually fully sufficient to access reports via Analysis Services . Installing Reporting Services will also impact the performance and the disk space utilization.

Go back to SQL Server Installation Center window appears, select Install SQL Server Reporting Services.

Download the installer and run it by clicking Install Reporting Services.

Enter the product key and press Next.

Review and accept the license terms, press Next.

Press Next.

Specify the destination and press Install.

Press Configure report server.

Make sure that your local server is selected, then click Connect.

Go to Database and perform the configuration

    1. Click Change Database

    2. Select Create a new report server database and press Next.

    3. Click Test connection and if it succeeds, press OK and Next. Otherwise consult MS documentation for details.

Go to Web Service URL, then press Apply.

Go to Web Portal URL and press Apply.

Then verify the correct installation of SQL Server Reporting Services by clicking the URLs link.
This should the default website http://<address>/Reports without any error code (if asked for credentials, use the credentials of account used for the installation).

At this point you can close the Internet browser and Report Server Configuration Manager.

Grant users the privileges to access the reports:

    1. Open http://<address>/Reports in your Internet browser
      Note: if using Internet Explorer, it is recommended to use "Run as Administrator" when launching it and to to disable "Compatibility View"

    2. Log in using administrative account for reporting services
      Note: use the account performing installation of MS SQL and Reporting Services

    3. Press Settings in the right upper corner > Site Settings

    4. Select Security tab on the left side of the window

    5. Press Add group or user -> in the Group or user name field type in BUILTIN\Users

    6. Place a checkbox next to System User

    7. Click OK

Enable replication:

    1. Start Microsoft SQL Management Studio and connect to the Database Engine as the user sa.

    2. Right-click Replication to display the context menu; then select Configure Distribution.
      Note: If this menu is not available and you see Publisher properties instead, this step has probably already been done and you can proceed to next step.

    3. In the window that opens Next, then Finish>>| and Finish.

    4. Replication is now enabled, click Close.

Install Reporting Services tools (such as rs.exe)

    1. Download installer at https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/ssdt/download-sql-server-data-tools-ssdt?view=sql-server-ver15#ssdt-for-vs-2017-standalone-installer .

    2. Acknowledge license terms by pressing Next.

    3. Select SQL Server Reporting Services and click Install.

    4. Once the installation finishes, click Close .

    5. Press Win+R > type systempropertiesadvanced > press Enter > click Environment Variables .

    6. In the System Variables section select Path and click Edit .

    7. Add the path to location where rs.exe was installed to and confirm all changes by OK buttons
      Default path is: C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services\Shared Tools\

Setting up the database location

This step is optional. It describes how to set the location of database files to another server disk.

Run Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio and connect to Database Engine. Use the sa login.

Right-click the database server and select Properties.

Select Database Settings and enter the new location for databases by clicking the browse ( ... ) button and selecting the location, or by entering the path in the text box.

Click OK (located at the bottom of the page) to save the new location.
